    Very nice and informative site.
It helped me a lot in deciding to buy my first brick or not.
Reading your site I came to the conclusion that a 10 years old
744 GL cannot be too bad an investment.

    thanks,

Great site! Good maintenance/repair tips! I own a 740 estate. Sadly, it is not by far the best car I've had. Lot of small problems, mainly related to the injection system. The FI appears to have a "best before date", and after this it seems to need rebuilding. Crap. Now the car won't start when it is cold (and is is now quite cold in Sweden!). Any one else experiencing this problem? Ignition cables, relays, rotor, dist.cap etc is checked and is OK. The Bosch FI-experts I have been consulting can't find the fault either. The enginge is a B230F, -88 (registered in may -88), early LH-version. I doubt that I will ever buy a Volvo with that FI-system again...

Very good site I have only just found it, having been recommended to me by my boss Kieran Nash, thankyou, I am sure I will become a regular visitor, having just become the proud owner of a 240 DL Estate with 120000 miles on the clock, it is in mint condition.I have a couple of minor faults, the water pump squeals from time to time, I will change it soon, the headlight wipers don,t. The interior light is intermittent and the rear washer won't. The rear wiper also has a mind of it's own. I have made my mind up to convert to LPG in the near future, as the price of petrol in this country is an outrage, 'at least Dick Turpin had the decency to wear a mask'.

Thanks for a great info resource. This page has saved me a lot of money.I'd like to share my problems that I've had with my 1991 740 turbo in the hopes that it might be of help to someone else.

    1. Symptom was no power but the engine ran. Limped home and found that a filter box damping foam pad had disintegrated and was sucked up against the air mass transducer screen. I cleaned up the mess and the car ran great.

    2. The engine died for no reason then would start and run intermitently. I found that the wires to the engine timing inductive sensor cable insulation had disintegrated. The wires touched when the cable was jiggled just right. I cut out the bad insulation, re-soldered the wires and RTVd the cable and sensor housing together. The car has been running great since.

My 740 is white and had 146,000 miles when I bought it. It now has about 160,000 miles. I bought it as a commuter car but fell in love with it. I'm now slowly upgrading and restoring it. Now that I can afford a new car, I'm sticking with my trusty 740.

    Regards,

    Mike Lucas

Loved my brick. It was an 88 240 which finally died at the hands of a pickup truck at 233k miles. Bought a V40. Mistake. has cost $7100 so far in repairs that Volvo has not seen fit to cover under warranty. Also has brakes that periodically don't work. Volo NA's response? Sorry, there is nothing we can do. Has Volvo always been like this? I now have signs on both my Volvo and my Nissan that say "my 2000 Volvo has been in the shop 4 months and towed 4 times". I am afraid I will drive all over town with them on until Volvo does right by my car and admit they sold me a lemon. If anyone has any pull with Volvo, please help!!!
